The 1986 film ‘The Fly’ starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis has a tag line that is used to this day. When Davis realizes that Goldblum is turning into an insect, she tells him, "Be afraid, be very afraid."

Fast-forward 34 years, and now we are combating the coronavirus, where every Second Amendment-loving patriot had better be afraid, very afraid.

We need not fear the virus itself as much as its ramifications. Obama advisor Rahm Emanuel once said, "Never allow a crisis to go to waste," and the left is using this mantra as if it were the title of their playbook.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see how the outbreak of this virus has given the left carte blanche to attack and strip away our rights and Constitutional freedoms one by one.

Aside from churches and synagogues being shuttered and people being fined and or arrested for things as asinine as being on an empty playground with their child, we saw the first, second, and fourth amendments completely ignored.

This battle is being lost without the firing of one shot. Gun stores were closed, the sale of ammo ceased, and the issue of concealed carry permits were halted.

On March 23, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said gun stores would no longer be allowed to stay open. He stated, “We will be closing them, they are not an essential function.”

On March 24, Sheriff Gerald Baker of Wake County, North Carolina suspended pistol and concealed-carry permit applications. In North Carolina, you have to have a permit issued by the county sheriff even to purchase a weapon.

On April 2, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo closed all gun stores, deeming them "non-essential."

While many of these “orders” and “rules” have been overturned in court, the left continues to look for other new ways to limit our Second Amendment rights.

As GPM reported previously, Jackson, Mississippi Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba issued an executive order suspending open carry laws. His reasoning (or lack thereof) shows there is no limit to the left’s “logic.” He stated in his video announcement:

"In this moment of great distress and economic tension, it is important that we eliminate the ability for illegal weapons to inflict irreparable harm on our city. I want to make it clear that I have no principal disagreement with the Second Amendment right to bear arms, but all rights must be balanced by reasonable regulations. A right that protects illegal guns and puts more people in fear, a right that escalates conflict beyond a point of resolution, and a right that interferes with another person’s right to live is not a legitimate right to be maintained."

Hang on, did I read that correctly? "…A right that interferes with another person’s right to live is not a legitimate right to be maintained." I guess he’ll be closing all the Planned Parenthood centers as well, right? I won’t hold my breath.

This is the “slippery slope” many Second Amendment advocates have been warning about for years. We have seen many so-called rights erased all at once, all in the name of “safety.”

The author of "Freedoms Nightmare," Harald Zieger, grew up behind the Iron Curtain and summed it up best when he said, "America is the greatest nation on earth because it’s the only one with a First Amendment. We’re the only nation with a First Amendment because we’re the only one with a Second Amendment."

If you love your freedom and support the Second Amendment, or for that matter any of the amendments and the Constitution, you can’t turn a blind eye to what is happening here and now.

Contact your representatives and join a no-compromise gun rights group and stand up and speak out. Let it be known that we will not sit idly by as our freedoms are stripped away.
