An armed mother and off-duty military police officer sprang to action and stopped a robber who was threatening a group of women and children with a gun.

Katia da Silva Sastre, 42, was taking part in a Mother’s Day celebration over the weekend in Sao Paulo, Brazil when Elivelton Neves Moreira, 21, approached and pointed a gun at the group in an attempted robbery.

“Little did the gunman know, Sastre was carrying a pistol of her own and shot Moreira three times in the chest, according to the Daily Mail,” FoxNews.com reported.

“I didn’t know if he was going to shoot the kids or the mothers or the security guard at the school door,” Sastre said. “I just thought about defending the moms, the children, my own life, and my daughter’s.”

Moreia did not survive the gunshot wounds, and Sao Paulo’s governor honored Sastre for her bravery.
