Colorado’s former Democratic governor-turned-2020 presidential hopeful has joined his fellow candidates in laying out a plan for increased gun control at the federal level, should he be elected Commander-in-Chief.

Hickenlooper announced in a statement:

“In this county, before you can drive a car, you have to get a license and demonstrate you can responsibly drive that vehicle. I believe we should create that same rite of passage for gun ownership. Under my plan, people born after 2001 would need to get a license and pass a test that demonstrates they can safely handle and store a gun before they possess one.”

“Hickenlooper is also calling for expanded access to mental health services in schools, money for community-based programs to end gun violence in urban areas and national universal background checks,” The Denver Post reports.

Here’s a roundup of what other Democrats running for president have said about destroying the Second Amendment (and they’re just getting started):

Joe Biden said:

The “Second Amendment exists” but not everyone is “entitled” to own a gun.

“By the way, if one of you left the keys in your car down the street, and a kid comes along and jumps in it and takes off, you could be held liable civilly for that. So if you own a gun, put a damn trigger lock on it. Put it in a case. You have an obligation.”

Kamala Harris said:

“Upon being elected I will give the United States Congress 100 days to get their act together and have the courage to pass reasonable gun safety laws. And if they fail to do it, then I will take executive action. And specifically what I will do is put in place a requirement that for anyone who sells more than five guns a year, they are required to do background checks when they sell those guns. I will require that for any gun dealer that breaks the law the ATF take their license.”

Harris has called for permanently banning AR-15s and other so-called “assault rifles.”

Cory Booker said:

“Nowadays, there is more regulation over toy guns than real ones…We have different regulations for toy guns and no regulations for weapons on our streets that are killing so many people.”

“[We are going to] bring a fight to the NRA like they have never, ever seen before — and we will win.”
