Product Review: Mossberg 940 JM Pro Competition Autoloader

By: Friedrich Seiltgen

Gunpowder readers know I am a big fan of shotguns. I’ve owned a few Mossbergs over the years, a M195 Bolt action with a two-round magazine that I paid $40 for back in the 80s, a 500 pump, and a 9200 autoloader. All of them were fine guns, and it looks like I’m going to be picking up another Mossberg!

Recently, O.F. Mossberg & Sons added something new to its shotgun lineup: the 940 JM Pro! The JM stands for Jerry Miculek. If you’re into the shooting sports, you will recognize the name of this 3-Gun World Champion! The gun is feature rich, fast cycling, and out of the box competition ready!

The 940 was designed in collaboration with Jerry Miculek, so needless to say, this is one great gun for competition. If you have the need for speed, this is your scattergun! It’s got a redesigned gas system that allows up to 1500 rounds between cleanings, as well as larger ports to cycle lighter loads. The internal parts are nickel with a boron nitride coating for faster cycling.

The stock boasts a length of pull adjustable up to 1.25” as well as drop and cast. The forend has been slimmed down and features Mossberg’s signature texturing. The receiver is gray anodized aluminum with gold accents and comes pre-drilled and tapped for optics.

Both the bolt release and charging handle are oversized and contoured. In the accuracy department, Mossberg installed HiViz fiber optic sights up front and a Briley Acu-Set extended choke tube to get those pellets where you want them! This gun has all the features needed to make you a champion, the rest is up to you!

The loading port has been enlarged/beveled and set up for quad loading, which makes the 940 the only out-of-the-box shotgun set up this way. It also features an anodized follower in bright orange, as well as an elongated elevator.

This upgrades on this gun are well worth the price, as you’d be spending a lot more to do it yourself. This gun is accurate and lightning fast, so whether it’s shooting skeet, ducks, or competing in a 3-Gun Match, the Mossberg 940 JM Pro can do it all!

That’s all for now folks! Please keep sending in your questions, tips, and article ideas. And as always – “Let’s be careful out there.”
